Pharmacies are shutting down across Iowa, and there is concern more closures are on the horizon, according to a new study from Drake University professor Michael Andreski.
His findings reveal a concerning trend showing alarming rates of closures statewide, especially among independent pharmacies not attached to large chains. At least 87 of those pharmacies have shut down since 2008, causing more than half of Iowa's counties to rely on one or two pharmacies to serve regions as big as 974 square miles.
